3 Key Lower Back Injury Treatment Tips to Save Your Holidays & Make Travel More Tolerable.

Dr. Kelly herself isn't immune to hurting herself now and then.
In the interest of science, & striving to relate to each patient personally, Dr. Kelly herniated a disc just before a big road trip. She was able to manage with directional exercises, anti-inflammatory medications and use of a strategically placed towel roll.

What’s worse than stressful travel over the holidays?

Suffering a lower back injury ‘just’ before a long trip by car, train or plane. That’s worse.

I’ve been there. And I want to share 3 KEY TIPS to surviving that trip after you hurt your back. This might just save your holidays. You’re welcome. 🙂

3 KEY lumbar back injury treatment tips to save your holidays:

1. See a Physical Therapist

Physical Therapists (Physiotherapists, Physios,, PTs, whatever you call it where you live) are musculoskeletal experts. They will assess the how and why of your injury, and get you on the fast track to recovery.

How? I’m glad you asked!

You see, most back injuries benefit from something called “Direction Specific Back Exercises.” The gist is that if you injure your back in a certain direction, it is not going to want to go in that direction (going in that direction would be painful), but going in the other direction feels great.

PTs assess your injury for directional preference, and teach you the best ways to move for your back, to otpimize your healing and recovery. It sounds simple, but they are dang-near miracle workers at finding “the position” that’s best for your recovery.

2. Consider prescription anti-inflammatory medications

Back injuries sometimes need a more specific drug than Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Consult with your general practitioner with your history of injury.

Especially if your pain radiates from your back past your knee and has a strong directional preference, getting on the right oral anti-inflammatory can make all the difference in the world, in making it home to enjoy Great-Grandma’s Secret Pie.

3. Towel Rolls

As a key part of your lower back injury treatment, your back might prefer to be supported in a more neutral position, rather than allowed to collapse into flexion (slouching) or extension (arching).

Rolling up a standard beach towel, or a sweater or small blanket, and placing it behind your low back, can support you in your ‘best’ position, allowing your body to work smarter, not harder, and improving your comfort of travel.
